In the year 1990, she was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood, California. DuVernay began producing for broadcast journalism while she was in her university. Her work left her dissatisfied with journalism so she decided to shift her focus towards the publicity industry. DuVernay found a job immediately out college, as a new publicist at a studio. The company she founded for her own PR, The DuVernay Agency was created in 1999.
